star light, star bright; first star i see tonight

i wish i may, i wish i might

please have the wish i wish tonight

dear shooting star,

i could wish for money or fame or for someone to love but tonight, i wish to know what it feels like to love my own body. i wish to stop avoiding mirrors or dodging cameras or squeezing my eyes shut after stepping out of the shower. please don’t get me wrong, shooting star — i think my body is amazing. she works hard in a million little ways to keep me thriving. we understand each other better than we understand anyone else. we share our own little love language in all the little things we do to keep each other happy.

i just wish with all my might that she didn’t look the way she does.

shooting star, just once would i like to look at my reflection without shameful tears blurring my vision. i would like to go just one day without feeling sorry for my soul, who seems to be trapped in a house that doesn’t belong to her. if i were heartless i would have wished for a different body altogether — but the thing is, shooting star, that no matter how much it dismays me, this body is mine. she is mine, and i am hers; we belong to each other for now and forever. she loves me enough to keep me alive and that’s why it pains me that i haven’t yet learned how to love her back.
